>A Tale of Two Yarns – 2KCBWDAY1

>I’ve decided to take part in the 2nd Annual Knitting/Crochet Blog Week.  This is going to be a stretch for me because, as most of you know, I don’t blog daily.  I’ve been wanting to do more blogging, and eskimimi has picked the topics, so I’m going to give it a whirl.

Do you have a favorite yarn?  I’ve given this much thought lately and I don’t know if I could pick just one.  When creating a pattern, I try very hard to use a yarn that anyone could afford.  There’s nothing worse (in my opinion) than purchasing a pattern only to find out you can’t find the exact yarn that is called for.  So, with that being said, I will say that one I’ve been using very frequently is Lion Brand Cotton-Ease.  I have a hard time with straight cotton, and it bothers my hands when using it for too long.  Cotton-Ease has the durability of cotton, but is soft, and easy to use because of the acrylic blend.  The only downfall I see is that there aren’t as many colors as I would like to get my hands on.

On the flipside….

Recently a local yarn shop was going out of business and, at 75% off I bought some yarns I wouldn’t normally buy.  I’ve only tried one so far. WAY to fancy for me to buy again!  It was Feza Dazzle.  First, let me say, if you buy a novelty yarn, research the best way to crochet/knit with it.  I didn’t and it didn’t turn out how I expected.   Very disappointing considering the price.  I won’t create a pattern for it, and if I had done my research I may, or may not, have purchased it. Even at 75% off, it’s more than I normally pay for yarn.  Live and learn…..

  • >A favourite yarn? That's hard!! I like natural fibres and if I'm making things for me I react badly to lanolin so traditional wool is out … Some of my best crochet has been with bamboo – can't remember the brand unfortunately, but I like the feel of the material and the slightly silky quality.

  • >Love your post for Knit and Crochet Blog Week (which I'm also participating in this year!) Great tips for choosing novelty yarns and great point about trying to make patterns with affordable yarns. I haven't tried the cotton-ease yet so I'll have to check that out next time I go on a yarn binge!
