Engine 1 Train Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

Posted by on February 20, 2012 in Crochet | 41 comments

My nephew recently turned 2 and I decided to make him a hat after one of his favorite characters, Thomas the Train.  I immediately loved how it came out and couldn’t wait to share it with others.  I gave everyone on Facebook a preview of the pattern, and was all set to publish it, when I heard one comment over and over……”It looks just like Thomas.”  Honestly, a red flag went off in my head. You see, when I first started designing patterns, I had decided not to do character hats because of the fuzzy copyright line. Could I change the name and still sell the pattern?  Probably…but, that still made me uneasy because of that one comment I kept getting.  If I was going to sell it, I felt it should be different somehow, maybe my own version of a blue train, etc.  But the hat was done, and I wasn’t going to make another version, so I decided to contact HIT Entertainment who owns the copyright on Thomas the Train.  I asked them if I could sell the pattern, and if not, could I at least give it away ;)  No one ever got back to me. So, after much deliberation, I’ve decided to give the pattern for free, that way I’m not profiting from their copyright.  If you were one of the first few that pre-ordered it before it was released, you can either send me a copy of your receipt for a refund, or you can pick another pattern instead.  Your choice. Enjoy! :)

If you’d like a copy of the pattern you can download it here.  Enjoy!

Happy Crocheting!

  2. :( It won’t let me download it…But, you did a wonderful job!!!!

    • You should be all set now. I think I have it fixed. Let me know if you still have trouble with it.

  3. won’t open the download link

    • The link is fixed now. Sorry about that.

      • How do you whip stitch? I’ve never heard if it

      • It’s just a form of sewing pieces together. In this case you would be sewing the pieces onto the hat.

  4. That is really nice of you Melody! Thank you!

  5. Hi Kristine,
Thank you to share your story with us, feel bad that you didn’t make any profit with this cute pattern now but I’m pretty sure that there’ll be plenty of new great ones will design by you soon.

  6. Oh goodness!! I have a nephew who loves “Eddie”! This would be so perfect for him, thank you for posting the pattern!

  7. That is adorable! If only I’d come across your pattern a few years ago, the little guy next door is a huge huge train fan. Thomas anything was a hit and this would have been perfect. He’s past that stage now though, darn it. Nicely done and good of you to share your pattern.

  8. Thank you, this will look adorable on my grandson!

  10. Thank you so much for this pattern. It took me one night to make it and my 4 year old grandson had only one response: “I can’t believe my eyes!” Again, thank you so much.

  11. What are the number colo I can fine them on the download anywhere????

    • For the main color I used Vanna’s Choice Baby in Aqua. Color # 840-102. Hope that helps. The rest are just small amounts and you can use any brand.

  12. Can not download the pattern. I have a 2 year old that would LOVE this hat.

    • Darla, did you try the button at the bottom of the post? If you still can’t get it to work it is also on Ravelry for download.

  16. hi there,I started out making your engine hat for my grandson who loved it.Since then I have been asked to make several more and too date have’nt charged anything, but Ican’t keep doing this.I will have to stop making them or charge something, how do you feel about this.Awaiting your reply.Ilive in rural NZ so not easy to sell crafty stuff.
    regards Heather
    P.S it’s an awesome pattern.

    • Hi Heather,
The reason the pattern is free is because Thomas the Train has a copyright on it. So it’s illegal to make a profit on it. I know others who make it and sell the hat, but I personally can’t/won’t recommend it. Sorry.

  17. Making this hat — so far too cute! On the Earflaps option: Round 1 – 12dc in ring, slip stitch to 1st dc. (12 sc). My question, because of the 12sc at end, am I making double or single in round 1?

    • I think I just did a duh — much easier to FPdc in the DC lol — sorry :)

  18. Kristine, I love this pattern. I have been looking for days to find a pattern. My grandson loves Thomas the train. I have a question. He is five years old. Will that biggest size fit him. Thank so much for the free patterns

    • It may be snug the first time or two he puts it on, but it should fit him fine after that. 2T – 5T is a general size and could go larger (unless he has a large head). My 5 year old fits into both 2T-5T and the next size up (which I didn’t make for this hat, unfortunately).

  19. I would like a pattern of Thomas the train for hat and afghan please send to my email layerss@sbcglobal.net if needed I will pay thank you

  20. I just have to say thank you for your great pattern! I made it for my train loving nephew for Christmas and he loved it! His mother has had a hard time convincing him that it is a winter hat and now that it is getting warm he needs to put it away

    • Thank you for sharing that, Christine! I love hearing stories like this! My daughter wears her frog hat I made her, no matter what the temperature, too. I usually let her wear it until it gets in the 80′s then I enforce not wearing it. One day she told me she was hot. I told her to take the hat off. She said, “nah.” lol

  21. Thank you Kristine for sharing. I am going to make one for my father’s 80th birthday as he is a thomas fanatic

  22. Ok I am in the process of trying this now. Directions are great and I love this pattern. But I do have a question on the Number 1 process. The directions are confusing to me, and i think there are some directions missing. Could you please help me out on this?

    • Let me look at the pattern and see if I can help. Anything specific you don’t understand?

  23. I cant find the pattern :(

    • Underneath the photo there is a link to my Ravelry page. Once you get to the pattern page there is a link on the right-hand side. It says “download here”. When you click the download button it will download.

  24. I have been trying to download this pattern. It keeps sending me to Ravelry but the pattern doesn’t show up. I even tried to search and it still doesn’t come up. could you perhaps email it to me? My grandson would love it.

    • If you click the link to the Ravelry page, it’s on the right-hand side. It says “download here”. When you click the download button it will download.
