Irish Flag Cowl Crochet Pattern

I know I posted this free pattern last week, but there’s still a couple of days left, and this was super quick to make (less than a couple of hours).

If you don’t have the yarn on hand, you could always use 2 strands of worsted weight held together.  Or, if you’re good at adjusting patterns, you could use a single strand of ww and just do more rows of each color.  I don’t have a row count for you, but I can tell you each section was approx. 8″ tall.   If you’d prefer the pattern in pdf form, see the bottom of the post, for the link.


Irish Flag St. Patrick’s Day Cowl

Finished Size:  approx. 8” X 24”

Materials:  Lion Brand Hometown

  • 1 skein – 2 oz. Green
  • 1 skein – 2 oz. White
  • 1 skein – 2 oz. Orange
  • Size “Q” crochet hook
  • Yarn Needle

Note:  This could also, very easily, be changed to an Italian flag by using red, instead of orange.

Gauge:  7sc = 4 inches


ch – chain

sc – single crochet

sp – space

hk – hook

yo – yarn over



using green


Row 1:  sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch1, skip next sc, sc in next ch, repeat from * across, turn.

Row 2:  ch2, sc in next ch1 sp, * ch1, sc in next ch1 sp, repeat from * across, sc in last sc, turn.

Row 3:  ch1, sc in 1st sc, ch1, * sc in next ch1 sp, ch1, repeat from * across, sc in beg ch2 sp, turn.

Row 4 – 13:  Repeat Rows 2 & 3, changing to white at end of row 13, turn.

Row 14 – 26:  Repeat Rows 2 & 3, changing to orange at end of row 26, turn.

Row 27 – 39:  Repeat Rows 2 & 3.

Fasten off leaving a 12” tail. Whip stitch ends together.
