Tunisian Sampler Scarf CAL – Part 1
To kick off the CAL we’re going to begin with one of the basic stitches of tunisian crochet. It’s called the tunisian simple stitch (TSS), but it is also known by a few different names. Here are a few:
- TSS – tunisian simple stitch
- afghan simple stitch
- tunisian basic stitch
Let’s begin…..
Section 1 – TSS
ch 20,
Row 1: crochet in back ridge of beginning ch (see fig.1), insert hk in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up a loop, repeat from * across leaving all loops on hook (see fig. 2). (20 lps on hk)
To complete row 1: yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, * yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across.
Fig. 1 – Back Ridge of chain, “V” is on bottom of hook
Row 2: skip 1st vertical bar (directly below loop on hook), * insert hook under next vertical bar (see Fig. 3), yo, pull up a loop, repeat from * across to last bar, insert hook through both loops of last stitch (see Fig. 4). (20 lps on hk)
To complete row 2: yo, pull through 1st loop on hook, * yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across until there is 1 loop left. (see Fig. 5)
Fig. 4 – insert hook through both loops of last stitch
Row 3 – 12: Repeat Row 2.
Happy Crocheting!
I like it..my hook is a G which is to small but it will work to learn and I will get larger when I can find it to order..thank so much! :)
How often will you be posting lessons?
Bev,
I’ve added another post. I’m planning on approx. 4 a week. I’ll skip tomorrow and have 2 more posts on Thursday & Friday.
OOOhhh as soon as i have finished my latest project I might have a go at this :-) thanks ever so much!
I must be doing something wrong. I got to the third row and it’s curling. Is it supposed to curl??
Tunisian tends to curl a bit. If it’s curling a lot sometimes it helps to go up a hook size. Did you use a hook at least 2 or 3 sizes than what the yarn recommends?
I don’t even know what size the hook is. I believe it’s a h hook. I only have that one and crochet hooks and 4 ply yarn
i cant find parts 2-4.please help
Hi Gwen,
Here is a link to a post that has all the parts in one spot. I’ve also added a link button in the sidebar to find it easier. Thanks!

Hope that helps.

Are you using 2 hooks?
No, I was just using the 2nd one to show stitch placement.
I know I’m years late to this topic, but … It’s unclear to me just WHICH are the two loops to work through in figure 4.
If you hold the end of your project and turn the edge towards you, you will see 2 vertical bars. You are going to put the hook through both of those. Hopefully that helps. If not, I can take a picture or video to make it more clear.
