Rustic Endeavor Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

The Rustic Endeavor Cowl uses basic stitch combos to add some fun texture to your dreary winter days.


The cowl is written in 2 sizes (child and adult). If you like to wrap up twice there is an infinity version as well.

MATERIALS


Finished Sizes: 

  • Cowl 24½ (27)” circumference x 8½” wide
  • Infinity 54” circumference x 7″

Yarn:  #4 worsted weight-125 (200) yds child (adult)/350 yds for infinity
Sample used: Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! in Greybeard

Crochet Hook: Size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Yarn Needle

Gauge: 13 esc x 9 rows = 4” in pattern

Difficulty: Adv Beginner: Uses easy stitches with no shaping.

Abbreviations

  • blo – back loop only
  • ch – chain
  • esc – extended single crochet
  • puff st – puff stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • yo – yarn over

Notes: 

  • Pattern is written for the child cowl with adult sizes in parentheses. The infinity is written separately for less confusion. 
  • Extra rounds can be added for a wider cowl/scarf.

Special Stitches: 

  • Puff stitch – yo, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up loop, (yo, insert hook in same st, yo pull up loop) 3 more times, yo, pull through all 9 loops on hook. CLICK HERE for video tutorial

Cowl

Ch 76 (84), making sure not to twist your beg ch, sl st in 1st ch to join,
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st in 1st sc to join. (76, 84 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, work esc blo in each sc around, sl st in 1st esc to join. (76, 84 esc)

Round 3: Ch 1, working through both loops, esc in each st around, sl st in 1st esc to join. (76, 84 esc)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc blo in each esc around, sl st in 1st sc to join. (76, 84 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, puff st in first st, *ch 1, sk next sc, puff st in next sc, rep from around, ch 1, sk last st, sl st in 1st puff st to join. (38, 42 puff sts)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each puff st and ch-sp around, sl st in 1st sc to join. 

Rounds 7 16 (21): Repeat Rows 2 – 6 two (three) times. (For the adult size: If you want a less bulky cowl, only work 2 repeats.) 

Rounds 17 (22) 19 (24): Repeat Rounds 2 – 4 one time. 

Fasten off.




Infinity

Ch 168, making sure not to twist your beg ch, sl st in 1st ch to join,
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st in 1st sc to join. (168 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, work esc blo in each sc around, sl st in 1st esc to join. (168 esc)

Round 3: Ch 1, working through both loops, esc in each st around, sl st in 1st esc to join. (168 esc)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc blo in each esc around, sl st in 1st sc to join. (168 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, puff st in first st, *ch 1, sk next sc, puff st in next sc, rep from around, ch 1, sk last st, sl st in 1st puff st to join. (84 puff sts)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each puff st and ch-sp around, sl st in 1st sc to join. 

Rounds 7 16: Repeat Rows 2 – 6 two times. 

Rounds 17 19: Repeat Rounds 2 – 4 one time. 

Fasten off.
