Whispering Pines – Free Tunisian Square Crochet Pattern

I love this Tunisian Square crochet pattern. Between the beautiful texture and the soft yarn it quickly became my favorite.

The Whispering Pines Tunisian square is made by increasing on the forward pass, and decreasing on the return pass. With an easy 1 row repeat this square will take no time to make.

WHISPERING PINES TUNISIAN BLANKET SQUARE

Finished Size: 8″ square

Yarn: #4 worsted weight (good yarn sub would be Impeccable by Loops & Threads)
Sample used: Yarn Bee Easygoing in Willow – 1.25 oz/60 yds

Hook Size: Tunisian L/11 (8.0 mm) hook

Notions: Yarn Needle

Skill Level: Adv. Beginner – Uses decreases and increases for stitch combos, with no shaping.

Gauge: 5.5 reps x 12 rows = 4″ in pattern

Notes:

Because of the way this pattern is worked, your beginning chain & subsequent rows will have more stitches than your beg chain.
To adjust size, work beg chain in multiples of 2.

Special Stitches:

RetP: Yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * across.
Mod RetP: Yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 3 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * across to last 2 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops.
Tss sl st: Insert hook behind next vertical bar, yo, pull through vertical bar and loop on hook.
Sc2tog: [Insert hook between next 2 sts, yo, pull up loop] 2 times, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

TUNISIAN SQUARE

With MC, ch 24,
Row 1: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up loop, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up loop; rep from * across (24 sts on hook), RetP. (see Special Stitches)

Row 2: *Tss in next st, full st between current st and next st, full st between next 2 sts; rep from * across to last st, insert hook behind both vertical bars of last st, yo, pull up loop (34 sts on hook). Mod RetP (see Special Stitches).

Row 3: *Tss in next tss, full st between current tss and next st, full st between next full st and tss (skip both full st vertical bars); rep from * across to last st, insert hook behind both vertical bars of last st, yo, pull up loop. Mod RetP.

Rows 4-22: Repeat Row 3.

Bind Off Row: *Tss sl st, sc2tog (see Special Stitches); rep from * across.

Row 21: Insert hook behind next 2 vertical bars, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through both loops; rep from * across.
Note: If your bind off row is pulling too tight you can work a few of the sts in a single vertical bar instead of 2 at a time.
