Stepping Stones Chemo Hat Pattern
It’s hard to believe this is my 7th year taking part in the Crochet Cancer Challenge. This year I chose skin cancer because it currently hits closest to home for me.
If you haven’t heard of the Crochet Cancer Challenge here is a quick rundown. You receive a free pattern (the offer is for a limited time). In exchange for that pattern, you pledge to make at least 1 of that hat and donate it to cancer patients or a treatment center. The challenge runs all through October, which is cancer awareness month.
WHY I CHOSE SKIN CANCER
My youngest daughter had to have a sample removed and biopsied (thankfully all came back clear). I also have a very good friend who had a few skin samples tested (& needs more testing done because one came back positive). So, it felt fitting to create the Stepping Stones Chemo Hat this year.
The color for the skin cancer ribbon is black (which is very hard to photograph), so I also made a gray version so you could see the detail better.
Honestly, cancer has taken it’s tole on my family. The past 4 years have been the hardest years of my adult life. What you don’t see is the mental tole that cancer takes on people, not just the physical (that comment is not to discount the physical). This is a journey I would never wish on even my worst enemy.
I wrote the following for the Hope Lives Chemo Hat that I made for the challenge in 2018, but I wanted to share again. We need to remember there are so many people out there struggling to keep their hope alive. Hopefully these hats will help just a bit.
HOPE LIVES
Hope lives in those who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Hope lives in their loved ones.
Hope lives in every doctor fighting to find a cure.
Hope lives in every nurse who cares for their patients.
Hope lives in the hearts of every person who knows or loves someone fighting for a cure.
So, this year, I pray my hat can be a reminder to keep your hope alive and never give up.
STEPPING STONES CHEMO HAT PATTERN INFO
Finished Sizes: Baby (12-14”), Toddler (16-18”), Child (18-20”), Adult (20-22”)
Yarn: #4 worsted weight
Sample used: Lion Brand ZZTwist in Grey – 2.3 oz/165 yds (will make any size)
Hook: Size H/8 (5 mm). Change hook size to get correct gauge if needed.
Notions: Yarn Needle
Difficulty: Adv Beginner – Uses beginner stitches and has increases.
Notes: Hat is worked from the top down.
