How to Crochet the Moss Stitch Border

The moss stitch, also known as the seed stitch, woven stitch, and linen stitch, is an easy, fun stitch to use for a simple and/or colorful border.

Here are the basic steps to making the moss stitch border.

Moss Stitch Border Tutorial

Round 1: Sc around border of blanket (or any project) finishing with an even number of stitches.
Note: It is your choice whether you join with a sl st or just continue on to Round 2. If you join with a sl st, I suggest you ch 1 when you begin round 2.

Round 2:  *Sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc; repeat from * around.

Round 3: *Sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next sc; rep from * around.

Corners: If your project has corners, work 3 sc in each corner st.

PROJECTS IT’S GOOD FOR

Add this border to almost anything.

If you’re using self-striping yarn, or more than one color, this looks great when you alternate a different color each round.

I used the moss stitch border and a self-striping yarn for my Coronado Baby Blanket.

Happy Crocheting!
