Floppy Brim Sunhat – Free Crochet Pattern

For those warmer winter or cooler spring days when it’s sunny but your baby still needs a hat, there is the Floppy Brim Sunhat.

Floppy Brim Sunhat Pattern Info

Finished Size: Fits 0 – 3 months, 3 – 6 months, 6 – 12 months

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease (This has been discontinued but Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton would be a suitable alternative.

Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (5 mm)

Notions: Yarn Needle

Gauge: 3dc = 1 inch

HAT PATTERN

0 – 3 months – (up to 14” circumference)

Ch 3,
Round 1: 11dc in 3rd ch from hook, slip stitch to top of beg ch, do not turn. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch2 (does not count as dc throughout this pattern), 2dc in each dc around, slip stitch in top of 1st dc. (24dc)

Round 3: ch2, dc in 1st dc, 2dc in next dc, *dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat from * around, slip stitch to top of 1st dc. (36 dc)

Round 4: ch2, dc in 1st dc, dc in next 4 dc, 2dc in next dc, *dc in next 5 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat from * around, slip stitch to top of 1st dc. (42 dc)

Rounds 5 – 9: ch2, dc in each dc around, slip stitch to top of 1st dc. (42 dc) Do not fasten off.

3 – 6 months – (14.5” – 16” circumference)

Ch 3,
Round 1: 11dc in 3rd ch from hook, slip stitch to top of beg ch, do not turn. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch2 (does not count as dc throughout this pattern), 2dc in each dc around, slip stitch in top of 1st dc. (24dc)

Round 5 – 10: ch2, dc in each dc around, slip stitch to top of 1st dc. (48 dc). Do not fasten off.

6 – 12 months – (16.5” – 18” circumference)

Round 6 – 12: ch2, dc in each dc around, slip stitch to top of 1st dc. (54 dc) Do not fasten off.

FLOPPY BRIM

Round 1: ch2, 2dc in 1st dc & in every dc around, slip stitch in 1st dc.

Round 2: ch2, 2dc in 1st dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, repeat from * around, slip stitch in 1st dc. Fasten off.

OPTIONAL FLOWER

Ch5, slip stitch in 1st ch to form ring.
Round 1: (sc, 4dc, sc) in ring, repeat 4 more times, slip stitch in 1st sc. (5 petals)

Round 2: ch3, (working behind petals) sc in back strands of next sc, ch3, skip next sc, *sc in back strands of next sc, repeat 4 more times, slip stitch to 1st sc.

Round 3: (slip st, ch2, 5dc, ch2, slip st) in next ch3 space, repeat 4 more times, slip stitch in 1st sc. (5 petals)

Round 4: ch6, (working behind petals) *sc in sc from round 2, ch6, repeat from *around, slip stitch to 1st sc.

Round 5: (slip st, ch2, 7dc, ch2, slip st) in next ch3 space, repeat 4 more times, slip stitch in 1st sc. (5 petals) Fasten off.
