The Inspiration Behind the Design
Years ago, I saw this planner and the cover was misprinted. The colors were in a sort of zigzag pattern, but they didn’t match up. I saw it and thought, “That would make a great blanket pattern!”
That was probably about 7 years ago.
Life got in the way and I just never got around to it.
But the past few months I’ve been committed to completing those designs that have been in the back of my mind for so long. I figure, if they haven’t left my brain yet then I must make them!
So here it is . . . . .
Pattern Info
Finished Sizes:
- Preemie – 23” x 29”
- Baby – 32” x 39”
- Small Throw – 41.5” x 52.5”
- Throw – 50.5” x 59.5”

Yarn: #5 chunky/bulky weight
Sample used: Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Chunky in White & Crisp Air – 5 oz / 211 yds per skein
- Preemie – 13 oz/550 yds
- Baby – 18 oz/760 yds
- Small Throw – 23 oz/971 yds
- Throw – 33 oz/1393 yds
Crochet Hook: Size K/10.5 (6.5 mm)
Notions: Yarn Needle
Gauge: 1 strip = 4” across
Difficulty: Beginner: Uses beginner stitches, along with increases.
Stitches Used:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
yo – yarn over

- Sc2tog – insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Shifting Chevrons Crochet Blanket Pattern
Strip
Make 4 strips in (MC, CC, MC) order
Make 3 strips in (CC, MC, CC) order
With MC, ch 18.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 8 sc, turn. (19 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sk 1st sc, sc in next 8 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, sc2tog in last 2 sc, turn. (19 sc)
Rows 3 – 4: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 5 – 8: With CC, repeat Row 2.
Rows 9 – 12: With MC, repeat Row 2.
Rows 12 – 84: Repeat Rows 5 – 12.
Assembly
Using the mattress stitch, sew strips together with strip 1 facing in the opposite direction as strip 2. You will sew blue on white and white on blue. This will create the illusion effect.
