Peppermint Candy Coasters – Free Crochet Pattern

A cozy blanket…. a good book…. hot cocoa…. These are just some of the things that we love about the winter months. Now you can make some peppermint candy coasters to add to your must have’s this winter.

When my son was little he loved adding peppermint candy to his hot chocolate. Now you can add some peppermint candies to your hot cocoa and have them underneath your mug! These coasters are the perfect addition to your winter warm-up items and they make a perfect gift.


PEPPERMINT CANDY COASTERS


MATERIALS LIST:


Finished Sizes: 4.25″ wide

Yarn: #4 worsted weight cotton
Sample used: Sugar ‘n Cream cotton 

  • 1 – 2.5 oz. skein – White (A)
  • 1 – 2.5 oz. skein – Red (B)
  • 1 – 2.5 oz. skein – Dark Pine (C)  

Hook: Size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Yarn Needle

Gauge: Rounds 1–3 = 2” in pattern

Abbreviations

beg – beginning
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch


Difficulty: Advanced Beginner
Skills used: Increasing in the round and changing colors mid-round (tapestry crochet method).

Special Stitches:

  • Magic Ring – for tutorial, please see How to Make a Magic Ring.
  • Changing Colors – insert hook in next sc, yo, pull up loop, take new color and yo, pull through new color.  

Notes:

  • Use tapestry crochet method for carrying colors. See tutorial here
  • When changing colors, change to new color at end of previous stitch (see Color Changing above)
  • Coasters are worked in the round without joining.
  • Replace color B for color C for green peppermint candy coasters.


Coasters

Make 2 in colors A & B
Make 2 in colors A & C

With A, make magic ring, ch 1.

Round 1: Using A *work 1 sc, switch to color B (see Special stitches), 1 sc in magic ring, switch to A, repeat from * 4 more times, change back to A at end of last st, pull magic ring closed, do not join (see Notes). (5 white sc, 5 red sc)

Round 2: With A, 2 sc in 1st sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, *with A, 2 sc in next sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, changing to A at end of last st. (10 white, 10 red)

Round 3: With A, 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next sc, with B, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, *with A, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, with B, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * around, changing to A at end of last st. (15 white, 10 red)

Round 4: With A, 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, *with A, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * around, changing to A at end of last st. (20 white, 15 red)

Round 5: With A, 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, with B, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, *with A, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, with B, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * around, changing to A at end of last st. (25 white, 15 red)

Row 6: With A, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, *with A, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, with B, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * around, changing to A at end of last st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. (26 white, 19 red sc, 1 white sl st)   

Fasten off A & B.
Weave in ends.
