In Depth Crochet Stitch Afghan Square
>
NOTE: I made this in a 12″ X 12″ afghan square, but you could very easily use cotton yarn and it would come out a great size for a dishcloth. If you just like the stitch pattern, I’ve included instructions on how to adjust the size for your own personal use.
ch 44. (or, any multiple of 3 chains + 2 chains for foundation row)
Row 1 (wrong side): sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch2, skip next 2 chs, sc in next ch; repeat from * across, turn.
Row 2: ch3, (counts as 1st dc, now and throughout), 2dc in next ch2 sp, (work FPDC around next sc, 2dc in next ch2 sp) across to last sc, dc in last sc, turn.
Row 3: ch1, sc in 1st dc, *ch2, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, repeat from * across, turn.
Row 4: ch3, 2dc in next ch2 sp, *FPDC around FPDC one row below next sc, 2dc in next ch2 sp, repeat from * across to last sc, dc in last sc.
Repeat rows 3 and 4.
>That is NICE!!! I might do that sometime… BUt I'm in the middle of putting trim on 2 afghans…Susan
>Thanks Susan. I'm trying to finish up some projects too, so I know the feeling.
>Oooh I like this stitch pattern for a scarf I think, maybe in sock yarn. Thanks for sharing this! One question – is there an extra turn written in? There seems to be a turn written at the end of row 1 and near the beginning of row 2 also.
>Mia,Thanks for pointing that out. I fixed it. I'd love to see a picture of the scarf if you do it.~Kristine
>Thank you! I was looking for a dishcloth pattern and just made this (learning a new stitch in the process!). My mother-in-law will love the dishcloth and I enjoyed practising!
Hello, you may not even be there now, but I wanted to tell you thank you for all the beautiful crochet patterns. I am disabled and on a fixed income so I cannot buy all the patterns I want. With sites like yours, I, and many others like me, can now have all these wonderful patterns to make so many things like this gorgeous afghan square. I signed up for your newsletter if your site and newsletter is still active. Thanks again! ~ Dawn ~
Thank you, Dawn. Keep checking back, as I have tons of new thinks to post soon.
Fantastic. I”ts very close to the Waffle stitch that I use to make baby afghns. I belong to the Prayer Shawl Ministry at church and was looking for a different stitch to make some wraps. This will be my next project. Thank you!
You are welcome. I think I’m going to make another one and update this terrible picture ;)
Could you explain what an FPDC is as I am new to crocheting. Thanks!
Jamie,
It is a Front Post double crochet. I have a tutorial in my stitch guide. Here is the link for the tutorial.

Mine seems to be curling up on itself as I go, rather then laying flat. Is this common?
Can you email me a picture so I can see what it’s doing? Maybe I can help you figure it out.
Started this square yesterday and love it! It’s simple enough for people like me who don’t crochet well, but is very interesting and beautiful to look at. Both sides look great. Thank you for posting this pattern.
