American Flag Blanket Crochet Pattern

A couple years ago my sister asked me to make her an American Flag blanket. Needless to say, I put it off. I knew if I was going to do it I wanted to do it correctly and I knew the patterns out there weren’t what I was looking for. I like to be very literal in my design interpretations. (Ex: My Frog Pond Afghan has rippling water, 3-D water lilies, as well as lily pads, as well as my Red-Eyed Tree Frog hat has the 3-D eyes as well as suction cups pads.)

American Flag Blanket Pattern

Once I set my mind to making it, I decided I wanted it to be as close to a true American Flag as possible. I wanted 5 sided stars, not the 6 sided design that is out there. I also wanted a solid fabric, so I knew I couldn’t use typical crochet stitches that leave space between them. I found schematic measurements and spent days weeks doing the math to make sure everything was perfect. The result . . . . .

  • The star field is proportionately correct to the stripes.
  • Stars are worked directly into the pattern so there is no need to sew on 50 stars (or 100 to make it double sided). This will be double sided when complete.
  • Stripes look like a solid fabric. There are no holes between stitches, and you won’t have to use single crochet.
  • The finished project will be slightly bigger than a throw; closer to a full size bed afghan.

If you’d like to watch this LIVE video I did on Facebook you can see the afghan details up close. (The coupon code in the video was from when the pattern was released and is no longer valid.)

  • Congratulations on your Best in Show win! I’ll be making this as soon as it gets a little cooler. It’s for my middle son, a veteran, he picked out the pattern and the yarn.

  • Hi. I’m just starting this pattern and it says to use a crochet hook I/9 (6mm). My I hook is 5.5mm and the J hook is 6mm. Which one should i use? Thank you.

  • I like the use of dlc but the instructions for the star are very confusing. There appears to be typo in round 3 of the star square. Please check

  • I just ordered this pattern. My youngest is scheduled to be deployed in a few months. When his unit, an Air National Guard, first started talking about their deployments, about 9 months ago, he asked me to make him a flag afghan. I have been searching for a pattern like this, you have made my day. Thank you, thank you.

    • This made my day! Thank you. And thank your son for his service to this country. I’ve just done a video for the star, so if you need help just let me know.

    • Can you tell me which shop you purchased the pattern from? The tutorials are only available with the purchase of the pattern so I just need to verify and I couldn’t find it with a quick search. Thanks for your understanding.

      • I also am in desperate need of your star tutorial for the American flag. I purchased this pattern 3 years ago. The stripes are gorgeous but I have procrastinated on the stars. I purchased fromm ambassador crochet on Etsy, 12/18/18.

      • Kelly, can you email me directly so I can get you those links (they’re private and only available to those that have purchased the pattern). My email is ambassadorcrochet [@] gmail . com

  • Hi, thank you for your pattern, it’s beautiful and it’s moving for me thank you for the videos, i am a visual learner and this was a huge help. I have a question. When whip stitching the stars and triangles together, do you recommend doing as many as you can with the same piece of yarn, or do you recommend just doing a couple at a time?

  • Hello Kristine I recently purchased your beautiful flag tutorial from etsy and am having some difficulty with the stars. I started with the short stripes and I’m stumped. Could you please send me the 2 tutorials for the stars. Thank you so much.

  • Hi Kristine, Ardis here, I couldn’t find/ get how to attach stars to blue. I am making this for my Granddaughter: having a not so great time lol not sure about website?

  • I’m a fairly new crocheter. ;) Purchased the American Flag pattern off of Etsy, printed it off, and am still having difficulty understanding some of the directions. A video would help me so much. If you have any videos about how you made the flag afghan, would you please email them to me? Also, what’s the difference between Beg LDC and LDC? Thanks for your assistance. Your flag afghan is gorgeous.

    • Hi Melissa,
If you purchased it through Etsy there should be links to videos. Can you pm me through Etsy so I can find your order and help you better?
      Kristine
