How to Fix a Tilting or Twisting Granny Square
>Have you ever made a granny afghan, and at some point in the process it starts to look “tilted” or “twisted”? The picture below shows this gorgeous afghan from Thornberry. If you look closely it has a slight tilt to the center of the square. This may not bother some, and personally I think this afghan is gorgeous, but it may drive other crocheters nuts.

If you’re one of those who does not want your granny square to do this, here’s a simple solution. Turn your work after every row. Ex: Rows 1, 3, and 5 will be right side rows. Rows 2, 4, and 6 will be wrong side rows. Try it out and see if it works. The other benefit to turning your work is that there will technically no longer be a right side and a wrong side to your work.
Of course, there are some who are intentionally trying for the tilted look. That’s a totally different post, because there is actually a pattern to create that look!
>That's interesting..I didn't know about turning the square..thanks for the tip.
>I recently did some research for someone on this topic and this is the only solution I could find. I'd love to hear if it works, or other solutions.
>I was taught to turn after each row and I've never had a twisted granny… I guess this would be the reason why!!!
Very interesting, when you you turn do you do a turning chain?
My small squares are ok, but if a try to do a large piece it does twist.
Love your site.
You would still need to use a turning chain to raise your 1st stitch to the height of the rest of the dc’s. Hope that helps.
I’ve been making Granny Square afghans for over 3o years & I have NEVER had this happen…
That’s great, Shelley!

I have been sick lately and sometimes when laid up I get this urge to do something with my hands. So I learned how to crochet a granny square. I have made four so far, with dreams of maybe an afghan eventually, and the tilt is aggravating me. So thanks for the tip!
I have never had a problem of it twisting. What causes this, is it in the tension?
Marlene, I assume the twisting is caused by the beg ch3 being taller than the dc stitches so it leans.
I’ve just been searching for tips on how to stop granny squares twisting and found the answer on one of my favourite blogs. And no, you don’t have to turn the work after every row…

Hi! I’ve bee trying desperately to make a crooked granny square. I already crochet my grannies in the round and have never figured out how to tilt them. Can you please direct me to your pattern for a tilted granny?
Hi Laura,
I don’t have a pattern for a tilted granny square. I was just trying to help those that wanted to fix the problem. If yours aren’t tilting you can try a couple things. 1) make sure you’re NOT turning after each round, and 2) I would suggest maybe trying to add an extra chain 1 to your beginning chain count.
